With these two short films,
my WCSU professor instructed us to use screenplays penned by the writing students while the theater department provided the actors. With writing and acting responsibilities out of my hands, I focused on directing and editing. I believe “Legal Limit” and “Our House” are true team efforts. Everything was so organized and every crew member had a specialized purpose. The actors knew how to act, the script was ready to go, and I was actually able to obtain enough extras to simulate a house party for “Legal Limit”- a rarity in college film making.
Role: Director, editor, sound
I’m really proud of how “Legal Limit” turned out. I worked with the actors to really give each character his own distinct personality. I also made screenplay adjustments with the writer to eliminate a redundant character and fix some awkward pacing issues. (Warning: COURSE LANGUAGE)
Winner: “Best in Show” at WCSU’s Short Film Festival (2014)
Role: Co-director, editor
Unfortunately, the writer of “Our House” was unable to meet with the crew after we received the initial script. The humor in the screenplay wasn’t quite my style but I welcomed the challenge of directing a screenplay of which I wasn’t entirely a fan. I decided to keep the jokes in and then decided to add an emotionally heavy song to contrast the comedy. In the end, the short turned out much better than we expected.
